Comparative detoxication. 11. Conjugations of 1-naphthol and some other phenols in houseflies and locusts.

چکیده
Insects from a variety of Orders have been shown to detoxify phenols by conjugation with glucose and this mechanism has been suggested as a systematic biochemical characteristic of insects (Smith, 1955a). The phenols may be foreign compounds or may be those formed in the normal course of metabolism (Smith, 1955b, 1964; Kent & Brunet, 1959; Stay & Roth, 1962; Butenandt, Biekert, Kubler & Linzen, 1960). On the other hand, a glucosiduronate of 3hydroxykynurenine is said to be present in silkworm pupae (Inagami, 1955), and Terriere, Boose & Roubal (1961) detected 1-naphthyl glucosiduronic acid and glucosiduronic acid derivatives of 1,2dihydro-1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene and 1,2-dihydronaphthol in the excreta of flies dosed with 1-naphthol. No glucosides were reported. Possible explanations of this apparent difference between flies and other insects were that the extent of conjugation of naphthol differed from that of other phenols or that there were qualitative species differences in the glycosidic detoxications. We have therefore examined the rates of conjugation of a range of phenols, including 1-naphthol, in locusts in which the glucosidic detoxication is well established, and have also studied the conjugation of 1-naphthol and some other phenols in houseflies.

Sulphate, Phosphate and Histidine Conjugations
Phenols were detoxified in the Onycophoran Peripatoides novaezealandiae by conjugation with sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid, but no evidence for a glycoside detoxication could be found. [14C]Benzoic acid was metabolized in 24h to N2-benzoyl-L-histidine, which was identified by electrophoresis, chromatography and dilution analysis. Similar conjugates were formed with p-aminobenzoic acid and p...
متن کاملCharacterization of the zebrafish Ugt repertoire reveals a new class of drug-metabolizing UDP glucuronosyltransferases.
The zebrafish genome contains a gene superfamily of 40 Ugt genes that can be divided into Ugt1, Ugt2, and Ugt5 families. Because the encoded zebrafish UDP glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) proteins do not display orthologous relationships to any of the mammalian and avian UGT enzymes based on molecular phylogeny, it is difficult to predict their substrate specificity. Here, we mapped their tissue-s...
متن کاملA Highly Efficient Protocol for the Synthesis of 2-Amidoalkylphenols using SO3H-Functionalized Phthalimide (SFP) under Solvent-free Conditions
A highly efficient and simple protocol for the synthesis of 2-amidoalkylphenols has been described. The one-pot multi-component condensation of phenols with aromatic aldehydes and amides in the presence of catalytic amount of SO3H-functionalized phthalimide (SFP) under solvent-free conditions afford the title compounds in high yields and relatively short reaction times. It is noteworthy that th...
متن کاملEpigenetic remodelling of brain, body and behaviour during phase change in locusts
The environment has a central role in shaping developmental trajectories and determining the phenotype so that animals are adapted to the specific conditions they encounter. Epigenetic mechanisms can have many effects, with changes in the nervous and musculoskeletal systems occurring at different rates. How is the function of an animal maintained whilst these transitions happen? Phenotypic plas...

x. The toxicity and action offluenethyl or 2-fluoroethyl(4-biphenylyl ) acetate, several other monofluoroethyl esters, monofluoroethanol, monofluoroacetic acid and fluoroacetamide were studied in mice, houseflies (Musca dornestica L.) and twospotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch). 2. Toxicity varied markedly with the test compound, method of application and biological species. Generall...
